ABOUT US
FAMILY HISTORY
The Beefmaster breed has proven to be a success story for Petana Beefmasters, that is run and owned by the Koekemoer family. A father and son team that farms in the Wolmaransstad district of the North West Province of South Africa.
Piet Snr and Piet Jnr, and now also Piet Jnr Jr collaborate in all the decision-making processes regarding the Stud, Commercial cattle, and crops that include the different branches of the family business.
Our farming community went through a lot of strain regarding the very unpredictable and harsh couple of seasons we experienced these past few years with our very dry summers and cold winters. But regardless of these conditions, our Beefmasters were able to thrive and just show what a hardy and economical breed it is. We follow the six essentials of the Beefmaster breed namely Disposition, Fertility, Weight, Conformation, Milk Production, and Hardiness that suit our needs, pockets, farming practices, and natural environment perfectly.

STUD SELECTION
We are registered with the South African Beefmaster Breeders Association, we bought Bulls and Females from top breeders and started to breed our own genetic pool. We also introduced American Genetic through AI in our herd to furthermore improve our herd’s Superior Genetics (Bulls or Frozen semen) has been sourced from national and international studs. Progress was made on a steady pace.

GENETIC SELECTION
Genetic progression has been and still is one of our highest priorities and a major motivation for management decisions. Breeding methodology and corrective and selective pairing have enjoyed great emphasis. Our AI (Artificial Insemination) process is done with natural observation of the cows without hormone stimulation and our conception rate for AI is yearly around 80%.
Through a strong selection process, only 10-15% of the bull calves that is weaned will make it to the production sale. All the animals will be going through a very intensive testing and screening process that includes fertility and disease testing. With every stud animal we sell, we certify the animals’ health and fertility and comply with the rules and regulations of the South African Beefmaster Breeders Association.
The year 2020 will mark 19 years of stud farming for us and our 13th Annual Production sale. The Beefmaster breed is a very rewarding and a low maintenance breed that has brought us many years of successful stud farming.

FEEDING
Cattle are kept on natural veld and cultivated pastures for the majority of the time and graze on maize rest period after crops have been harvested in the winter time. We also produce our own silage, corn, and High Protein hay. The feeding program on our Bulls start from weaning until two and a half years and consists of natural veld and Mineral Lick. We only start to feed the Bulls a rounding ration 70 days before our production sale.
